  • Denotation means ‘dictionary meaning’.
  • Denotation means an explicit meaning, or universally accepted meaning.
  • Denotation means a primary meaning of any word.

Every word has one literal meaning (denotation), but several different implied meanings (connotations). The definition of the word provides the word’s denotation.
